The local churches, embedded in the landscape, have very different churches. The Catholic church of heimbach can only be visited from the outside. The Mariengrotte in Leitzweiler is a somewhat different place of prayer, the Protestant church in Berglangenbach is small but nice.  And the "Heidedom" in Rückweiler offers beautiful and rich ceiling and wall paintings.

Since there is a train station in Heimbach, it makes sense to start the tour there. At the station (Hahnenhübel) there are also parking spaces available for those arriving by car. Not far from the station is a bakery, where you can get the necessary provisions for the route, because there is no restaurant on the way.

The route is moderately difficult and it takes about 4.5 hours to cover the 15 km.

The route is signposted counterclockwise: Heimbach - Leitzweiler - Rückweiler - Berglangenbach - Heimbach.

The tour is signposted with a church symbol and the letter B

Tips and hints

Info for the perfect, extended walking tour
  • Difficulty: medium, medium tar, mostly wide forest and meadow paths, well suited for an extended walk. Difficult after heavy rains.
  • Distracting attractions: The first meters the church hiking trail runs along the local roads of heimbach. After about 500 m the forest border is reached. In the course of the path, country roads are crossed occasionally, in some places the path runs close to the road, but this is rather less disturbing. Around Leitzweiler, several paddocks are passed. On the church hiking trail there is a rather low volume of hikers predominantly in the recommended direction of travel, so that only a few hiker encounters should be expected.
  •  Water/Shade: The Kirchenwanderweg runs for the most part through wooded areas and is therefore suitable as a summer walk. Between Heimbach and Leitzweiler, the path runs parallel to a small stream, which can serve as a place to cool off.
  • Trash cans/cleanliness: On the church hiking trail, the principle of "what comes along on the hiking trail also comes back home with you" is followed as far as possible. Therefore, trash cans are only available in isolated places. Dog and human waste should not be left on/along the trail so that the enjoyment of the trail is maintained for all.

Destination

Train station, 55777 Heimbach/Ort or church in Heimbach, In der Treibe 6.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the station you turn in the direction of the old inn and walk along a narrow path. You cross the main road and go directly opposite into the street and then turn left "In der Treibe". At the end is the church of Heimbach.

We go back to the station turn right and walk to the end of the street "Am Hahnenhübel". There we cross the "Unnertalstraße" and go over the bridge.

After the bridge we come to the street "in der Au" and turn to the left and at the next crossing to the right. In the hairpin bend we leave the road and go straight into the forest. The path leads us in a curve. When we leave the forest, we turn right and enter the forest again.

We follow the path along Igelsbach and Eiselbach for a long time through the forest. After about 2.5 km we turn right and cross the Eiselsbach and the road (K 60). On the other side we turn right and walk a short distance down this road until a path on the left leads uphill into the forest.

The path now leads us uphill after about 150 m we make a hairpin bend to the left. After another 100 m turn right and after 250 m at the top turn left again. You will be rewarded with a great view of the Hunsrück.Now the path leads straight ahead along the hilltop until we reach Leitzweiler. Arrived in Leitzweiler we turn to the right and immediately again to the left. In the small wood on the right side we now see the Mariengrotte. Some steps lead us past benches up to the statue of Our Lady. Here you can enjoy the silence and take a rest.

Then we continue along the road and turn left twice until we reach the main road. Follow the road downhill to the village. We walk along the road for a while (about 100 m) until we turn right again onto a dirt road. The path leads us along the edge of the forest and we cross the Eiselsbach once again. Then we enter the forest. After about 150 m we turn right and after about 300 m in a sharp bend we turn left. After another 300 m we reach the new building area of Rückweiler.

We follow the road downhill and turn the 2nd street right into Flurstraße. Then we take the next street to the left into Berglangenbacher Straße. We follow it downhill until we reach the "Heidedom" at its end.

After visiting the church we go back up Berglangenbacher Straße and turn right into Flurstraße. Now we go straight on past the kindergarten out of the village.

We walk a bit on a tarred path, which we leave after about 300 m to the right. We now walk above Berglangenbach on a forest path. At its end we turn left and follow the path downhill. At the next crossing we turn left again and then before the village we turn left again into the forest.

The path now leads us through the forest for a while. We cross a clearing and we meet again the tarred road which we follow to the right downhill to Berglangenbach.

We reach the road "Am Biehl". The road makes a left turn and while the road then goes downhill to the right we continue to the left and turn right at the last house. At the tarred road we turn right and go downhill. At the next crossroads we pass the village again on the left. Now we can already see the church of Berglangenbach and we turn right to walk along the edge of a meadow until we reach the church.

After visiting the church we turn uphill. We are now on the way back to Heimbach. We turn left at the last house and then turn right onto a small path. We arrive at the "Flurstraße" continue along it. At the next crossing we turn right and go downhill. Then we take a sharp left into the "Heckweg".

At its end the path leads us again into the forest. We walk until Heimbach and come out there "In der Au".

We go downhill and turn right in a hairpin bend. Then we turn left. We see the Besenbinderhalle and pass the Heimbach elementary school. We go left again and right again and come back to the bridge which we cross. Across the bridge we reach the "Hahnenhübel" and return to our starting point at the train station.
