This stage takes us to the birthplace of the Vogtland region. The Reeves established their territorial lordship on Veitsberg hill and later when they built Osterburg Castle in Weida at the end of the 12th century.

It is worthwhile tracing the historical roots on foot. If you use the well-signposted footpath network, you can complete a circular walk that is about 10 km long. It connects the most attractive sights with almost untouched natural surroundings along the banks of the rivers White Elster and Weida. You can start your walk at two different places: the former convent and corn house in Weida or the historic wooden bridge in Wünschendorf.

The walk in Weida takes you to the Reeves’ family home – Osterburg Castle. You discover Weida and its sacred buildings dating from the medieval period during the varied walk through the old town: St Mary’s Church, St Peter’s Church and Widen Church. 

In Wünschendorf you encounter the oldest church in the Vogtland region – St Veit’s Parish Church. The former private monastery of the Reeves of Weida is located along the route there: the Premonstratensian monastery in Mildenfurth. You can find relaxation, enjoyment and individual accommodation along this route in Weida, Wünschendorf and Endschütz.

Turn-by-turn directions

In Gera fahren Sie in südlicher Richtung auf der Bundesstraße 92. Entweder Sie fahren ab dem Kreisverkehr bei Liebschwitz weiter auf der B 92 und starten Ihre Entdeckungstour vom Parkplatz Wallstraße in Weida. Oder Sie nehmen am Kreisverkehr die zweite Ausfahrt auf die L 1082 und biegen nach ca. 1 km rechts nach Wünschendorf ab. Parken Sie z.B. an der Otto-Crinitz-Mühle und laufen anschließend zur Holzbrücke. 

Beachten Sie die Zufahrtsbeschränkungen aufgrund der maximalen Höhen und Breiten der Wünschendorfer Brücken! Busse nutzen den Wendeplatz nahe der Otto-Crinitz-Mühle. Nur in Ausnahmefällen für die alleinige Besichtigung der Veitskirche gibt es eine Zufahrt über die Kreuzung B 92/B 175 (die sog. Fortuna-Kreuzung bei Weida) und den Ort Zschorta.

You can get to Weida (Mitte) with the railway "Erfurter Bahn" from Gera (Thuringia) or Hof (Bavaria). From Weida (Mitte), there is just a few meters to the historic sights like Osterburg castle. Check www.bahn.de for the train time tables.

Getting there

Coming from Erfurt, Leipzig or Nuremberg, take the exit "Lederhose" on the A 9 motorway and drive on the federal street B 175 to Weida. The Osterburg is signposted with brown signs. At the driveway to Osterburg, turn left into Wallstrasse, where there is a public car park.

Parking

You park in Weida on the public parking lot (cars and buses) in Wallstraße at Semmelweispark.
