The eleventh stage of the RheinBurgenWeg (RBW) takes you on a pleasurable hike along the edge of the hills above the river, with marvellous views of Father Rhine. There’s plenty of diversity along the way in the form of colourful hedgerows, verdant vineyards and shady patches of woodland. Your descent into the picturesque old town of Bacharach is the grand finale on this leg of the RBW.

Safety information

Wear suitable weatherproof clothing that will protect you from cold, wet, heat and sunshine.

Make sure you take regular breaks and don't overexert yourself.

Take enough fluids with you as there are sections without rest stops.

Wear suitable hiking boots/shoes which give you enough grip on slippery, steep, rocky and uneven surfaces.

Avoid any sections of the route which you feel are too difficult for you. Natural trails can quickly become wet and slippery in adverse weather conditions.

Particularly in autumn, you should be careful of uneven ground, roots, stones or holes that have been covered by leaves.

You need to take these kinds of adverse conditions into account every time you go on a hike.

Particularly steep and dangerous places are made safer with handrails or ropes. Please use these as safety aids. Handrails are not to be climbed on or used to get a better view!

Hiking enjoyment amongst the vineyards

Before setting off on the 11th stage of the RheinBurgenWeg, you should definitely make time to visit the town's ramparts and the Church of Our Lady in Oberwesel. At the junction heading out of the Old Town, the RheinBurgenWeg continues winding its way up the rocky Elfenley path to Schönburg Castle. Suddenly you are faced with the mighty castle ahead of you! The trail now descends through the forest towards the K 90. After a short uphill section alongside the road, the trail enters fields of vines and ultimately reaches the Engebach Valley. Further wonderful views await you! You soon reach the first one, the Pfalzblick viewpoint, which does justice to its name and presents the Rhine and Pfalzgrafenstein Castle from a genuine "box seat". You'll find it hard to drag yourself away to follow the diverting trail along the edge of the Middle Rhine Valley. A little later, you'll come to Sauzahn lodge, which offers a truly superlative view. The trail continues along the edge of the slope towards the Leimbach Valley. Down in the valley, the trail crosses the stream and road and leads back to the Rhine plateau. Time for a breather! The tour now takes on a more sedate aspect as it crosses the Rhine plateau, with few uphill or downhill sections, nevertheless offering quite awesome views of the Rhine Valley between the meadows and vineyards. Continue on to the edge of the slope where the RheinBurgenWeg winds steeply down a grassy track through the vineyards. It is well worth making time to climb the old restored tower, as you will enjoy one of the loveliest views of Bacharach from the top. The RheinBurgenWeg enters Bacharach through the Steegertor Gate. Follow the signposts for the most attractive route to the winding lanes and alleys of Bacharach, which takes you beneath Stahleck Castle and Saint Werner's Chapel towards the Church of St. Peter past the famous "Painter's Corner" (Malers Winkel).

Answered by Karina Krämer · July 04, 2021 · Community
