If you start your tour at the Freiersberger hut you can save yourself some meters of height. From the hut you need about an hour to get to the lake.

Surrounded by mountains and the fir and spruce trees of the Black Forest, the small lake sparkles in the sunlight. The Kar-lake developed during the last ice age and is part of the nature conservation area "Glaswaldsee".

In the beginning the tour from Freiersburger hut has some steep ascents before you turn onto the root paths down to the lake. Already at half of the way you will encounter the first resting place with a great view on the Glaswaldsee. A tiny hut as well as benches invite travelers to rest and refresh at the lake.

Author’s recommendation

Make a short detour to the Klagstein, a stone formation with a great view. You will find the way near the Juliusbrunnen.

Turn-by-turn directions

The cabin on top of the Freiersberg is our starting point for this small but challenging tour to the Glaswald Lake. Starting at the small parking lot, we follow the Westweg (red Rhombus) uphill through light woods. The steep incline rewards us with beautiful views over the sourrounding Black Forest hills. Passing the “Julius-Fountain”, we keep walking uphill to the intersection at an elevation of 960 m.

We follow a wild footpath covered in lots of tree roots. While walking we can catch a first glimpse at the lake. Having developed during the last ice age, the Glaswaldsee is one of the most beautiful Lakes in the whole Black forest region.

 The tranquility and peacefulness of the Lake definitely makes the descent worth your while. A narrow footpath leads around the lake.

 

We make our way back to the starting point the same way we came.

Public transport

From Offenburg (ICE or IC-stop) or Appenweier you can travel to Bad Peterstal via Ortenau-S-Bahn

Ortenau-S-Bahn (OSB): leave at Bad Peterstal train station

Südwestbus: Bus stop at Bad Peterstal town hall

When arriving by train you have to take a nearly 60 minute long walk to get to the Freiersberg parking lot.

Getting there

Bad Peterstal-Griesbach is within easy reach through the connection to the B28, the Rhein plain motorway (A5), as well as the Bodensee motorway (A81). 
  • From the upper Rhein plain (A5) take the motorway exit Appenweier and the road B 28 to Bad Peterstal. At the church take a right turn and drive 3 kilometers until you reach the parking lot Freiersberg at your left hand side
  • From the motorway A81 take the exit at Horb and drive along the B28 in direction of Freudenstadt and Bad Peterstal-Griesbach. At Bad Peterstal church take a left turn and drive another 3 kilometers until you rech the parking lot Freiersberg to your left hand side
