This is also the start of the Erasmus+ theme trail with a focus on "hydropower", which is about 1 km long and mostly follows the charcoal burner trail to the water playground of the WasserWissensWerk. At a total of five stations, you can learn interesting facts about drinking water supply and hydropower along the way. We reach the water playground, where you can play from April to October. It is freely accessible and only a few meters away from the WasserWissensWerk. Table and benches invite you to linger.
Continue to the WasserWissensWerk, which is located directly opposite the water playground. In the exhibition with interactive hands-on stations, visitors learn everything they need to know about water extraction and treatment, water distribution in the region, and how worthy of protection our limited and valuable resource is. In the WaterLab, exciting experiments and water tests can be carried out on the subject of the "properties of water". Those who wish can use exploration sheets in the form of a rally to set out on an exciting journey through the exhibition, either alone or in groups.
After the visit to the WasserWissensWerk, of course, a view of the nearby Steinbach Dam is not to be missed. The dam, which is used to treat drinking water, is located on the edge of the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. To get there, we first have to climb a few meters in altitude: Past the Wasserwissenswerk we follow the paved path to the left . Uphill we continue for a few hundred meters, until after a bend we finally reach the viewpoint to the Steinbach dam. There you can rest on the bench and enjoy the view of the dam, which compensates for the steep climb.
Back to the Wasserwissenswerk we now go on natural paths on slight descents through the forest. To do this, we walk back on the tarred road for a short distance until we see the signs for the "Köhlerpfad am Steinbach" dream loop. Please follow the wooden signs. We follow the trail downhill, which signs "Einstieg Köhlerpfad/Wanderparkplatz Wasserwerk 1,7 km". If you prefer to walk a large loop, follow the signs in the other direction instead and you can hike the entire dream loop "Köhlerpfad am Steinbach" (length 13 km). It is characterized by earthy, natural forest and meadow paths as well as information on regional history. Along the Steinbach and in the villages along the way, you can marvel at many installed trail signs made of different materials and in various sizes. In Langweiler, a former charcoal burner village, you can learn more about the life of the charcoal burner craft on information boards. Since the dream loop is laid out as a circular hiking trail, we can also return directly to the hiker's parking lot during the large loop. Further information about the trail: https://www.saar-hunsrueck-steig.de/traumschleifen/koehlerpfad-am-steinbach
On the small loop, we now continue downhill through the forest, along fields and along the rustic, rocky stream. We cross the Flachsbach stream and reach the entrance portal again. We cross this and continue on the tarred road for a few meters in the direction of Wasserwissenswerk. After a few meters we turn left and follow the dream loop "Köhlerpfad am Steinbach" on natural paths for about 900 meters to Kempfeld-Katzenloch. At the sign for the garden restaurant we turn left over the bridge.
In the garden restaurant at the waterfall, the tour can be concluded with a well-deserved stop. In the gallery at the old sawmill you can expect changing exhibitions in the gallery rooms, grinding demonstrations in the own grinding shop, a mineral market and gemstone hunting for children at the gemstone fountain. After a stop for refreshments, we will return to the parking lot along the same path.If you don't want to walk the last part to Kempfeld-Katzenloch, you can park there.
