Shady forests and open field landscape with views over the Hunsrück heights, to the Wildenburg high above Kempfeld and the Idarwald determine the tour. The hiker receives detailed information about the ironworks dynasty of the Stumm families, whose roots lie in the middle of the Hunsrück.

Along the tour, panels inform about the dynasty of the Stumm family. Johann Nikolaus Stumm learned the blacksmith's trade. This was the beginning of a family and company history in the iron and steel industry that lasted over six generations.

On the way, the hiker encounters former tunnels and spoil heaps on the valley slopes. In addition, there are remnants of smaller ore smelters and water-powered gemstone cutting and hammer mills, which are reminders of the once lively mining activity on the southern edge of the Hunsrück. Johann Nikolaus Stumm's first iron hammer was built on the banks of the Hammerbach in 1715. Two other hammer mills were located at the Asbacher Hütte, which today is an institution of the Diakonie with living and working facilities. Various vantage points offer distant views to the Wildenburg, over the Hunsrück heights or to the Idarwald. Passing the historical water loop Biehl (visit possible) you get back to the starting point Camping Harfenmühle with gastronomy and overnight accommodations.

Turn-by-turn directions

The hike along the Stumm-Eisenhütten-Weg (Silent Ironworks Trail) leads to the traces of the former global company, whose beginnings lie in the Hammerbirkenfeld district of Hellertshausen. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Stumm family owned four ironworks,13 hammers and two cutting machines in the Hunsrück region. After moving to the Saarland, where they acquired the Neunkirchener Hütte in 1806, Stumm AG was one of the largest mining companies in Germany until the 1970s.The first third of the very varied and extremely natural premium circular trail leads through idyllic forests, where several old tunnels draw attention to the region's mining past. Particularly between Asbach and Weiden, magnificent views enrich the open corridor passages, before the path leads through charming forest to the nature refuge at Schinderhannesfels. The round tour offers an entertaining way to enjoy the magnificent views over the Klingenberg and back down to the valley, where a special highlight awaits the hiker: the Biehl water loop.

Hiking boots required!

Our tips for carefree hiking pleasure

Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and the right shoes it is twice as much fun. Functional clothing, poles and breathable rucksacks are comfortable when hiking. But good shoes are indispensable. Sturdy jogging or leisure shoes are only suitable for short distances on level paths at best. For longer distances we recommend sturdy hiking boots with non-slip soles. Also remember to bring sun protection and a drink. One litre of water is ideal.
