A wonderful trail through an almost untouched landscape - truly a jewel among the dream loops. A premium trail rated with a fantastic 92 experience points by the German Hiking Institute. Hikers are led through original mixed forests and open meadow landscapes to sensational views time and again. You are also accompanied by the wild-romantic Nahe Valley. The Nohener-Nahe dream loop is currently the only dream loop with a direct rail link.

Another special feature along the way is the Waldgeistersteig (Forest Ghost Trail): it was originally created by Nohen children, the “forest ghosts”, and could then be integrated into the dream loop. Today, in addition to various play opportunities, this section of the trail also offers nice resting places for all hikers.

The Nohener-Nahe dream loop is one of the DVV permanent hiking trails, start maps are available at Café Allerhand and the Speisekammer restaurant in Nohen, also at the AGIP petrol station in Birkenfeld.

The wine cabinet with Nahe wine (white and red) with a view of the Nahe river. So have some small change with you, bring cheese cubes and enjoy.

Tips and hints

Tourist Information Office for the Birkenfeld region, Friedrich-August-Straße 17, 55765 Birkenfeld, Tel.: 06782- 9834570, www.birkenfelder-land.de / We are located right next to the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park.

Information on the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and the national park region, dream loops in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park and many activity offers can be found in compiled form at www.nationalparkregion-hunsrueck-hochwald.de

Information for dog owners:

Level of difficulty: medium to medium difficult, little tarmac, many narrow paths, well suited for an adventurous dog walk over uneven terrain

Distracting stimuli: Over the course of the Nohener Nahe loop, country or district roads have to be crossed from time to time, roads can sometimes be heard, but this does not detract from the hiking experience. There is a medium volume of hikers on the premium trail, so you should expect to encounter oncoming hikers.

Water/shade: The Nohener Nahe loop leads mainly through wooded terrain. Direct access to water is available to hikers and their four-legged friends just before Hohen at the old mill and at “Nahe Island”.

Rubbish bins/cleanliness: On the Nohener Nahe loop, the principle of “what you take on the trail goes home with you” is applied as far as possible. There are only rubbish bins available at selected points. The waste from dogs and humans should not be left on/along the trail so that the enjoyment of the trail is maintained for all.

Turn-by-turn directions

If you follow the direction of travel clockwise, you will find the entrance through a stately portal that lies below the “Burefels”, a relic from the ice-age that towers over Nohen at a height of about 25 metres. Here we get a wonderful view over the village. The trail then continues over a path, which is known as a “hollow”. Over the course of three millennia, people of the Bronze Age traders, Celts and Romans, as well as armies from the Middle Ages and modern times, passed through here until the beginning of the 19th century. Those who have a smartphone with them and would like to learn something about the story have the opportunity to retrieve some details thanks to a QR code on an information sign. The path gradually leads us uphill. After a while, you step out onto a field path and the view opens up towards Reichenbach and into neighbouring Saarland. We continue along the edge of the forest. Now you can let your gaze wander over the left into the Hunsrück. After a little more than 1.5 km, you step back into a cosy little forest. You quickly reach the “rock cliff”. In addition to the always well-stocked wine cabinet with Nahe wine, there is another exhilarating distant view towards Heimbach. Relaxation in nature and refreshment are guaranteed.

We continue downhill to the Nahe, which we follow to the left. Forest and meadow sections alternate. Along the Nahe, the trail leads past “forgotten places” and the “Nahe Island” - a wonderful place to soak your tired feet in the river. You then cross the Nahe and come to a grinding mill. Leaving it behind you, you take on a smaller climb. Once at the top, continue straight ahead. You reach a rock section that leads downhill. Half way, you can enjoy the view once more. At the bottom, the path meets up with the Nahe once more. You keep to the left. On reaching the meadow path, turn right. After some time, we leave the forest. The trail leads - accompanied by distant views - past the edge of the forest until you turn right into the Waldgeistersteig. The Waldgeistersteig was built by children from the local community of Nohen for children and offers various adventure, play and fun stations.

We continue through untouched forests. After some time, turn left. Follow the path, at the end of which the view opens up again, continue to the right and you are soon rewarded by two panoramic views. Now go over a meadow and you will reach the village again.

Those who wish can extend their tour on the Nohener-Nahe dream loop to the Nahe-Trail ("Nahesteig").
