On the ClassicTour, you discover the different facets of the Bad Kreuznach city forest with its old oak-beech stand and rustic pine forests. Right at the beginning, the trail leads through meadowland and around a dune landscape created by primeval seas. Along a shady stream bed you reach the Rheingrafenstein ruins, which offer great distant views from the viewing plateau. Another highlight is the rock formation Gans with its alpine character. Here, too, panoramic views await the hikers again and again.

Author’s recommendation

Don't miss the climb to the Rheingrafenstein ruins (keep), visit the Bad Münster spa park by ferry from April - October.

Safety information

Partly steep slope and narrow rocky paths.

Warning: Oak trees can be infested by the oak processionary moth over large areas. The caterpillar of the oak processionary moth poses a health hazard. The stinging hairs of the caterpillars contain a nettle poison. They can also be dispersed by the wind. Contact with the caterpillars can be harmful to the health of humans and domestic animals. Caterpillar dermatitis is particularly common, with the symptoms: skin rashes and redness, slight swelling of the skin, wheals, itching and burning all over the body. If the stinging hairs (which contain thaumatopoein) are inhaled, this can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose, bronchitis, asthma or even allergic shock. Even after the life cycle of pupa, caterpillar and moth, the empty webs with their stinging hairs pose a risk over a longer period of time.

Precautionary measures:

Heed warnings

Avoid infested oak trees (do not sit near them).

Do not touch caterpillars or webs (never try to destroy webs yourself).

Do not lie or sit on the ground in the vicinity of infested oaks .

Protect your body with clothing (neck, arms).

Keep animals on a leash, stay on the path.

Report findings. These can possibly be removed professionally with special equipment, endangered areas can be marked.

If you have come into contact with the stinging hairs of the caterpillars, you should change your clothes and take a shower.

Wash clothes at a temperature of at least 60°C.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the hiking portal, the trail briefly passes through meadowland, then a few kilometres lie ahead through breezy forest. Past the trim trail, the path leads to the forest playground and on to Münsterblick. The trail then descends via large hairpin bends and crosses the Lohrindenpfad. Then we reach the Porta Nava vantage point, which offers an impressive view of the rocky narrow valley. Continuing gently uphill and with partly stony ground, the tour approaches the highest point above the Nahe, the Gans. The trail continues along the cliff edge for a while, then we are back in wooded terrain. At the former Rhine count's castle, our path turns sharply right towards the observatory. Over forest paths and later over stony passages, we reach the Rheingrafenstein ruins with their impressive viewing platform. In serpentines with a few steps, we then descend into the Kehrenbach valley. From there, the shady path leads very gradually uphill. At the upper end of the valley, we turn left into a sparse forest and reach the stage destination, Meeressand. Now it is not far to the hiking portal.

Festes Schuhwerk sollte man trotzdem tragen. Wir kommen sicherlich wieder in diese tolle Region.
