Rhoen

The Rhön Mountains are a German low mountain range at the border triangle between Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. The Rhön is usually divided into the High Rhön with the Wasserkuppe, the highest peak of the mountain range, and the Kuppen Rhön, which also includes the Anterior Rhön and encloses the High Rhön. The Rhön is largely forested, but is nevertheless known for its forest-free mountain tops with their high moors and ideal take-off sites for gliders and paragliders.

Maps and trails

The Rhön is located in the southeast of the East Hessian Highlands and thus belongs to the southernmost parts of the low mountain range. The mountain range of volcanic origin is bordered by the Fulda depression in the west, by the Fulda-Werra mountain range in the north and by the rivers Werra, Jüchse and Bibra in the south. A large part of the Rhön belongs to a biosphere area and the low mountain range is home to a high number of different biotopes and species.

The landscape is mainly characterized by forests, the wood-free mountain tops are adorned by high moors. Small lakes and brooks as well as the rivers Franconian Saale and Fulda can be found in the region. In the middle of it all there are rocks and block dumps, castles and palaces, fortified churches and medieval half-timbered houses.

The Rhön is a region of stories: Here you can discover the former inner-German border, follow in the footsteps of the Celts, experience geology, look at the stars and taste Franconian wines and Rhön beer.

Natural highlights in the Rhön

A clear highlight of the Rhön is the Wasserkuppe, the highest mountain of the low mountain range and Hesse. Not only hikers come for the beautiful view, the Wasserkuppe is considered the "cradle of gliding". Numerous gliders and paragliders take off from the meadow hilltop. Also the Kreuzberg is visited with pleasure. With a monastery and the associated monastery brewery, the "holy mountain of the Franks" is the destination of numerous pilgrims. The Milseburg is called the "Pearl of the Rhön". The mountain surprises with a striking, rocky profile and is the highest peak of the so-called Kuppen Rhön.

In addition to mountain peaks, the Black and Red Moor are particularly popular nature excursion destinations. The two high moors impress with rare plants and animals, information centers, observation towers and moor nature trails. Especially hikers and in winter cross-country skiers are happy about the paths through the two impressive moors.

Active in the Rhön

Outdoor sportsmen and women are mostly on foot in the Rhön. The over 6000 km long and well signposted network of hiking trails attracts with highlights such as the "Hochrhöner" and the "Rhön-Höhen-Weg". The Hochrhöner stretches over 175 km from Bad Kissingen to Bad Salzungen and has several extra tours. The Rhön-Höhen-Weg leads from Burgsinn over the Kreuzberg to Bad Salzungen on the Werra and covers 137 km. Of course there are also many shorter tours in the low mountain range, which only wait for an ascent.

Those who arrive by bike can let off steam on 2500 km of paths and various mountain bike trails. It goes high into the mountains, relaxed by rivers and over well passable asphalt roads through the mountains. Besides the "Rhönradweg", the "BahnRadweg Hessen" is particularly popular, but there are also numerous other routes available for cyclists.

In winter, not only skiers are on the slopes of the ski resorts, but also cross-country skiers come to explore the extensive network of trails. Winter hikers get their money's worth and sledders or snowshoe hikers will also find the right route.

Kann die schlechten Bewertungen hier absolut nicht nachvollziehen, die Runde hat mir sehr gut gefallen, besonders der sehr hohe Pfad-Anteil.
